's an unnecessary attempt to roll back voter rights. will many, many voters be confused and unable to comply? joining me now is john avlon. listen to mrs. obama over the weekend. >> we cannot let anyone discourage us from casting our ballots. we cannot make anyone make it feel unwelcome in the voting booth. it's up to us to make sure that in every election, every voice is heard and every vote is counted. that means making sure our laws preserve that right. monitoring the polls to make sure every eligible voter can exercise that right. >> so john, so many new laws. so many different requirements now. poll workers are going to have a field day trying to figure out what it all means. is there the potential for chaos at the polls come november? >> is there the potential? absolutely. we're changing the rules. that leads to a degree of uncertainty. people who haven't had to show id befo i.d. before in certain states will have to do so. some folks may be afraid of that. we have a tortured history of voting rights in this country. laws strike an emotional button. we have instances in the past of vot

't appear like this was an issue heading in the right direction. that's why a late friday afternoon release from the dni was needed. >> the poll number is not that surprising. >> 43% of the public approves of anything that president obama does at this point. this statement if you unpack it is gobbledygook. command and control? were they associated or al-qaeda or whatever? unclear if they exercised command and control of the attack. the way it was done suggests somebody was running it. there was an intelligent being in charge of this clearly organized and premeditated attack. even this statement will get revised soon. >> intelligence officials said in 24 hours they knew it was a terrorist attack and thought it was al-qaeda. the public statement it seems is different than that. >> if you read the dni statement it's a cover your rump statement for people at the political end of this. you read the nonsense and say is this what we are spending $50 billion a year on to get intelligence? jonah raised a point this is an issue when the embassy is sacked. the ambassador is killed. they're attacked fr

these polls aren't right. a conservative site called american thinker tweeted "skewed polls indicate obama is in trouble not romney." and most of the tweets we're finding are from conservative groups. >> and some liberals are mocking this saying your guy is behind and you're trying to blame the polls and in one case saying ha ha ha what are you smoking, dude. but there's also a web site on the right side of the political spectrum called unskewed polls that makes the argument that-- and there's alway arguments about this in polling, some gets down in the weeds, but that romney is ahead. i would just say that some of these polls may indeed be off but there's so many polls now that show the president not just with a lead nationally but as much as a nine or ten point lead in swing states. they'd all have to be off by a lot for that to be a significant factor. >> it's another whole conversation going on there about the polls. normally people feel pretty helpless. this is a way to talk about it. >> brown: >> and a way to get that message forward. because i think that what happens in presidential

into the debate with the latest gallup tracking poll still showing mr. obama holding a lead. this morning it's six points. >> this is the ball game for mitt romney right now because if he doesn't do well in this debate, it's going to be hard for him to get back in the race. >> reporter: both candidates have checklists. dos and don'ts for the debate. mitt romney has to avoid appearing detached, that he can't relate to average americans. his to-do list, the three cs, show some compassion, that he's competent and that he can, indeed, connect to voters. >> all three of those things, he suffered over the last couple of months, especially the last couple of weeks. this those three cs, that's where he's got to do really well. >> reporter: while they lead in the polls, team obama know that debates can be a game-changer. so the president will have to look strong and forceful, not passive, and he needs to avoid appearing irritable or impatient, and don't be long-winded. >> they're trying to get him into the mode of being able to answer questions short, concisely and to the point, and so it's much more like

very close along those lines. right now, though, for the moment, the race looks like mitt romney is slipping and obama is in front. >>neil: i was talking about an easy electoral win to the president if you buy the polls, and i don't, but the popular vote is tight. on to what is happening in the swing states, republican governors like to point out and we will elaborate on that, wait a minute. we are running these states, you are seeing the improvements in a last them because republican governors are exacting the changes. what do you say do that? >>guest: it complicates mitt romney's tack. he is trying to make the case that obama is not good for the economy and we are worse off than four years ago but in a lot of states, in florida rick scott and in ohio, john kasich, they have unemployment rates under the national average. romney has had his message undercut. >>neil: where does that come? when times are good the incumbent benefits and the times are bad, he doesn't. the governor is not inconsequential although he or should be in the scheme of things, if they are not up for election

both obama to go down as they're going up. >> all right, mike. and apparently you've been deputized by "sports illustrated." you're here to reveal the new cover of "sports illustrated." >> what? >> there's a lot of good news, good buzz inside the beltway. it's on the cover of "sports illustrated" this week. they're calling washington/baltimore america's unlikely new sports capital. seth davis, lanny son is writing in "sports illustrated" about the beltway as the new sports super power. we have the washington nationals tied with the reds for the best team in baseball. we have great hope for the redskins with this quarterback, rg3 which "sports illustrated" compares him to president obama. >> i hope he's better than that. >> yeah. it's definitely a moment. i can tell you as a yankee fan, the orioles are frightening at this point. >> aren't they something? >> mike allen, thanks so much. >> have a good week. >> a point of personal privilege here. >> please. >> i want to hear about one story today and one story only. and i want to know what's going on in kansas. mika, do we have a kansas

, hardship right there in the middle of america is actually give gettingous. -- getting worse. let me give you key number. from the start of the obama administration the median household income in america has fallen, repeat, fallen, down around $4,000. we've not seen this kind of decline over a long period of time, three, four years, we have not seen this before. if you go further and look at the hardship picture we find this year a half million people, actually more than a half million people flat-out dropped out of the workforce. they quit looking for work. they're out of the workforce. and another 736,000 people have gone on social security disability this year. add it up all together, declining income, more people on disability. far more people on food stamps, 12 million more on food stamps, that is a picture of hardship and declining standards of living all across middle america. that is where we stand this september. martha: yeah, i mean the numbers are very grim. yet so interesting to me, stuart, a couple of opposing things here. you have a housing market that seems to be picking up

think the re-election of president obama would likely make righting the ship much more difficult. >> four years from now. >> four years from now. we talked about structural in the economy, we're also going to talk about structural within the agencies. eight years of lisa jackson at the epa is something to be really concerned about. eight years of this nlrb, we could be reunionizing the whole country and somebody would write a bill says you can't have right to work. >> say romney wins, how quickly, in your estimation, do things turn around? what happens? what is the shift? to the extent, can you impact any of this? >> that's the caveat i was going to give you. >> i think whoever is elected president in a month from now, they will have to do major, major stuff. obviously you got two different ideologies, and i think if romney were elected, he's going to have to do major stuff, absorb major pain, but hopefully create a base from which the country can grow again. i don't think increasing meld i care is going to increase the growth rate of the country, and create more jobs, as an exam

and likely voters. how about jobs? six to two, worse on jobs. who's better? obama wins. the one place where romney wins is as maria said, on the next one, on the deficit. overwhelmingly, people think the deficit is worse than it was four years ago. they're right. they say romney, only within the margin of error, which is 3.5%, plus or minus on this poll. take a look at the next series of charts. romney wins hands down on who will be better to invest for you. who do you want to coach your favorite team and who would you want to hang out with? about five to two americans pick obama. that may be part of the reason for obama's support here. another fascinating issue here is obama looks to have neutralized what would normally be a republican edge on the issue of taxes. who will increase your taxes? 45% of the public says obama. 42% say romney. you can see the reverse here on income groups. poorer people think that obama will not raise their taxes. they think romney will. the reverse when it comes to wealthier people. this is interesting. one other thing i want to show you is change in racial sup

. thank you! >> all right. we're watching mitt romney there in springfield, virginia. only 40 days until the election. president obama we're also watching for as well. he's also in virginia, expected to speak in virginia beach moments from now. you see the podium there. virginia, a very important swing state. 13 electoral votes in that state. the recent polls now showing that president obama is slightly, slightly ahead of romney in the state. the last cnn poll of polls for virginia, he was leading 50% to romney's 44%. you might recall back in 2008 president obama won virginia and became the first democrat since 1964, lyndon johnson to actually win that state and that was significant. i'll bring in jim acosta who is traveling with mitt romney. he's at the event talking a little bit about the message we heard from mitt romney. clearly it's important for him to reach the working class. that came in some of the comments he made regarding trade with china. what does he need to do? what does his team think they need to do to make sure he holds on to virginia? >> reporter: suzanne, as you know,

two-to-one win. 18-year-old freshman noel fisher says getting his peers to vote for president obama in 2012 is crucial. >> i would say is the biggest the largest split between ideology between the republican candidate and the democratic candidate the republicans right now are trending extreme conservative and it's just i don't think we have room for any of those extremes in our nation >> woodruff: but for all the enthusiasm of these obama volunteers, national surveys of young voters show a more complex picture. john della volpe is director of polling for harvard's institute of politics. >> it's almost night and day judy. you know whereas young people four years ago were among the most enthusiastic members of the electorate. we see major dissatisfaction with the process, with the campaign and far less political engagement than we've seen four years before. >> woodruff: hoping to capitalize on that dissatisfaction, mitt romney's campaign is using new targeted smart phone applications in an effort to pull young voters toward their candidate. 21-year-old o.s.u. senior niraj antani says

on putting the pressure on president obama. at the same time, he can't appear to be mean. he'll have a tough balancing act on wednesday night. >> how much pressure is he under right now? >> huge, huge. romney is behind in all of the battleground states. this is the last big audience that mitt romney is going to have with about 4 1/2 weeks to go. by the time, we get to the third debate in late october in the battleground states, because of this early voting, a third of the voters with votes already in the can. >> so far, the polls at least show that mitt romney hasn't been able to capitalize on the economy right now. do you think that he could do that with foreign policy? >> that's right. the 2,000th death. the president is also facing a lot of questions on the death of the american ambassador chris stevens in benghazi. he has to convince voters that he has the better answers on the economy. >> going to be something. thank you so much. >>> and don't forget to watch abc's "this week" later this morning. george's guests will include new jersey governor chris christie and white house adviser dav

: all right. so he's going to get sharper in his tone, in his contrast, he's no longer worried about offending independent voters or swing voters who may have gone with obama last time but, you know, not worried about offending them about their vote once before. but it, is there a time for that to work, chris? we are six weeks out from this election. >> well, look now, six weeks is a relatively short time in politics, but -- in real life, but in politics it's eras. six weeks ago the race looked different, and we have had a million different tempests in teapots that both campaigns have flapped their wings tourously about. but in reality this is a long time in politics with three debates. we've heard the tough new tone from romney before. we certainly heard it when they rolled out paul ryan, the number one deficit hawk in the house. we've heard this before. the question for romney is, will he stick? will he stay there, and will he continue to prosecute president obama's record and policies in a more robust way? because in the past what he's done is tried the tough new tone and not stay
